NOTICE OF RACE
1.0 ORGANIZING AUTHORITIES
The Organizing Authority (OA) for the 2008 Offshore Challenge is the Charleston Ocean Racing Association.
2.0 COURSES AND SCHEDULE
2.1 The Starting Line – The starting line for all classes will be between the inflatable mark and the orange pole located on the Carolina Yacht Club dock
2.2 Starting Time
2.2.1 All classes are scheduled to begin racing on Thursday July 3rd at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Savings Time (EDT). Each boat must check- in with the Race Committee prior
to the first warning signal. All boats must check in, and receive acknowledgement from
the RC prior to the warning signal.
2.2.2 A courtesy gather signal, “three short “ blasts, will be given at 18:54 EDT. The
scheduled time for the warning signal for the first class start is 18:55 EDT it may be just one start.
2.2.3 Starting sequence will be in accordance with RRS 26.
3.0 RULES
3.1 The Rules - The race will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008
(RRS), the 2006-2007 ISAF Special Regulations for Offshore and Oceanic Racing
Category 3, except as any of these are altered by the sailing instructions.
3.2 Categories - For the purposes of RRS 79 and Appendix 1, this race is designated
Category C.
4.0 CHANGES TO N.O.R or S.I.’s
Any changes to the notice of race and/or sailing instructions will be posted on the CORA
Website.
5.0 ELIGIBILITY
5.1 Boat Eligibility Boats must be single- or multi- hulled sailing vessels with a minimum
LOA of 30 feet having inboard auxiliary power. manned by an eligible captain and crew
, and meeting all safety requirements of Section 8.0. The
organizing authorities may consider the qualification of a boat by virtue of its offshore
history and/or survey.
6.0 RACING DIVISIONS
6.1 The Measuring Committee - The OA Measuring Committee shall have full authority
to determine suitability of any boat for entry into a particular fleet and may place such a
boat into any fleet at its discretion. The Measuring Committee shall have full authority to
divide competing boats into fleets, divisions, classes etc.

6.2 Divisions - Expected racing divisions would be PHRF spinnaker, PHRF nonspinnaker,
6.3 Multiple Fleets - In the event of multiple fleets within a division, the Race Committee
will base fleet splits on ratings of entrants to best optimize fleet size and competitiveness.
7.0 RATINGS
7.1 Ratings Boats will be assigned a PHRF rating by the Official Measurer of the
Organizing Authority. There is no cost to obtain a PHRF rating but the Official Measurer
must have all information necessary to determine a rating no later than 5 days after the
Registration Form is accepted.

8.0 SAFETY
8.1 ISAF Special Regulations - All boats shall comply with the 2006-2007 ISAF Special
Regulations for Offshore and Oceanic Racing Category 3 including US Sailing
prescriptions.
9.0 ENTRY PROCEDURES
A completed Registration Form, crew list and the registration fee are required to begin the registration process. The organizers are not obligated to accept all registrations for entry. Registration Forms are available on the CORA website.
10.0 REGISTRATION FEES
The registration fee is $50.00 for Non CORA members and is free to a current CORA member .
11.0 MANDATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT VERIFICATION
11.1 Equipment Inspection Check List – The captain of each boat is responsible for
ensuring that all equipment is in serviceable condition, stored appropriately, and that the
crew is trained in its deployment and/or use. Each captain shall be required to inspect
his/her boat and it’s equipment. The captain of each boat shall complete and submit the
Equipment Inspection Check List provided by the OA.
11.2 Certificate of Compliance - The captain shall complete, sign, and submit a
Certification of Compliance (Appendix C) as outlined in the 2005-2006 ISAF Special
Regulations for Offshore and Oceanic Racing Category 3.
12.0 Time Limit
To score a participant must finish with in twelve hours of the first yacht to finish in its respective class. If there are no competitors that have finished by 12:00 EDT Saturday July 5th the race will be abandoned.
13.0 SCORING
Scoring will be based on PHRF corrected times over distance of all finishing boats.
14.0 AWARDS
14.1 Trophies - Trophies will be awarded in each fleet, one for every three boats entered
up to a maximum of three trophies per fleet. .
15.0 LIABILITY RELEASE
The Charleston Ocean Racing Association, bears no responsibility for accidents,
damage or injuries to boats or persons arising from any cause during the race or related
activities. The captain's responsibility is as set out in the 2006-2007 ISAF Special
Regulations for Offshore and Oceanic Racing Category 3 including US Sailing
prescriptions and as defined on the registration forms.
